SIAN KA’AN

Means ‘Origin of the Sky’. This biosphere reserve contains tropical forests, mangroves and marshes, as well as a large marine section intersected by a barrier reef. It provides a habitat for a remarkable rich flora and a fauna comprising more than 300 species of birds, as well as a large number of the region’s characteristic terrestrial vertebrates, which cohabit in the diverse environment formed by its complex hydrological system.

TULUM RUINS

Tulum Ruins is a site of a pre-Columbian Mayan walled city serving as a major port for Cobá. The ruins are situated on 39 ft tall cliffs, along the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico.

COBA RUINS

Coba was estimated to have had some 50,000 inhabitants at its peak of civilization, and the built up area extends over some 80 km². Agricultural was popular by the 1st century. The bulk of Coba’s major construction seems to have been made in the middle and late Classic period, about 500 to 900 AD, with most of the dated hieroglyphic inscriptions from the 7th century However, Coba remained important and new temples were built and old ones kept in repair until at least the 14th century, possibly as late as the arrival of the Spanish.  There are still remains of a walk path between Coba and Chichen Itza.

CHICHEN ITZA

Chichen Itza was a major focal point in AD 600–1200 and was one of the largest Maya cities. The city may have had the most diverse population in the Maya world, a factor that could have contributed to the variety of architectural styles at the site.

The ruins of Chichen Itza are federal property, and is maintained by National Institute of Anthropology and History. The land under the monuments had been privately owned until March 2010, when it was purchased by the state of Yucatan.

VILLA ARGHY HISTORY

Villa Arghy France

The origins of Villa Arghy begin across the Atlantic Ocean. The sister house to Villa Arghy-Tankah was built in 1937 by Anne Marie Pasgrimaud, a self-made and self-taught French entrepreneur in the coastal community of La Baule, France. The house was originally built as a retirement home in this mild-weathered tourist and fishing community.

As in Mexico, it is a tradition to name homes in France. Ms. Pasgrimaud named the house Villa Arghy after her two granddaughters, Arlette and Ghyslaine. The combination resulted in “Arghy” (Ahr-ghee).

The house remained in the family when Ms. Pasgrimaud passed away, inherited by her daughter Simone Rousseau who lived there for 42 years. Both Ms. Pasgrimaud and Ms. Rousseau were very strong and independent women—not willing to relinquish the house even when the town was occupied by Nazi Germany.

Many of our design elements were taken from the original Villa Arghy and incorporated into Villa Arghy—Tankah. These include the house name script, the fountain in the front of the house, stucco and red brick trim.

Our hope is that Villa Arghy’s distinct history is revived in our Caribbean getaway and that each Villa continues to serve potential visitors as a retreat for those wanting to enjoy an escape of surf, sand and fabulous sunset and sunrises.
